چکیده

A variety of pulmonary reactions have been associated with the inhalation of metallic dusts. 1, 2 Some of these result in familiar pneumoconioses, whereas others simply result in intrapulmonary pigment deposition. Some of the metallic materials that can cause disease as well as the typical reaction to deposits of these particulates are listed in Table 1. Electron microprobe analysis can be useful in the identification of these particulates and, in some cases, may clarify the nature of pulmonary disease. The most useful instrumentation for the identification of these particulates consists of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with a back-scattered electron (BSE) detector and an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDXA). 3 By means of this methodology, individual particulates may be identified and analyzed for their elemental content. The application of SEM/BSE/EDXA to the diagnosis of metal-induced lung disease is the subject of this presentation.

Interstitial lung disease and asthma in hard-metal workers: bronchoalveolar lavage, ultrastructural, and analytical findings and results of bronchial provocation tests.

Five patients with respiratory disorders associated with hard metal exposure are described. In four patients electron microprobe analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage cells or lung tissue was used to show tungsten and other hard-metal components. Three patients had interstitial pneumonia and fibrosis with unusual multinucleate giant cells. Electron microscopy showed that the giant cells comprised ...

Elemental analysis of occupational granulomatous lung disease by electron probe microanalyzer with wavelength dispersive spectrometer: Two case reports

The parenchymal lung diseases caused by metal inhalation include interstitial fibrosis, giant cell interstitial pneumonitis, chemical pneumonitis, and granulomatous disease, among others. We reported two cases of granulomatous lung disease with occupational exposure to metal dusts other than beryllium. They had worked in the battery manufacturing industry for 7 years and in an aluminum-processi...

The distribution of trace precious metals in minerals and mineral products

DATA on the distribution of the precious metals (Au, Ag and the platinum=group elements Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt) are rapidly accumulating as a consequence of the application of microbeam analytical techniques such as the electron microprobe, the proton microprobe, and the ion microprobe. The new data obtained with these techniques build on knowledge accumulated over the last 140 years using bulk...
